We got a dog!

We got a dog!

Yes, you read that correctly. The woman with three kids, a husband + a house, gave in + got a dog. Why, you ask? I really have no clue.

I am not against dogs, not in any way. But with so much on my plate already, I have just been putting off getting a dog for a long time. My husband + my oldest daughter have been begging for one. Like down on their knees, sobbing, begging. I have held strong up until this point.

My husband has been particularly obsessive about it lately though. Every single day the week before his birthday, he would come home + say, “Well, I guess you didn’t go get me a dog today, huh?” He was reminding me every day of what the Humane Society’s hours were for the next day…it was a little psycho.

He had asked if we could get Chelsea, my oldest daughter, a dog for her birthday which is at the end of April. I told him no, we needed to wait at least until summer when he would be home more (he’s a teacher + gets summers off except for football practices because he’s also a coach).

Then on his birthday, I was just sitting there after breakfast with the two little ones + all of a sudden, I thought I should go get him a dog for his birthday + surprise him when he got home. I have no idea where this thought came from, maybe it was because he had been bugging me extra lately + I was just tired of it, I don’t know, but I got it in my head + I knew if I didn’t just go do it, I would talk myself out of it.

Soooo, I called my mother in law to see if she could come over early to watch the kids for me. I was so nervous on the way to the Humane Society. I really had no clue what I was getting myself into.

When I got there, I walked back to where the dogs were + almost every single one started barking + going crazy. I started to turn around + then I noticed there was a beautiful golden lab sitting there quietly + still + looking so, so sweet. I looked at the other ones, but I kept coming back to this one. I asked if I could take her out so they let me go outside on the porch with her. They took her leash off + she just kept her tail down + was very hesitant when I would reach out to pet her, but she would still let me do it. I could just see that she was terrified + had no trust for people, but she was so sweet.

Turns out, she had just given birth to eight puppies only three months before. She had some health issues that caused her to have to stay there a little longer until she was cleared to be adopted. Of course, all her puppies were adopted super fast + were no longer there. My heart broke for this sweet dog. So I just went for it, + I asked them what I needed to do to take her home with me.

So after I did all the adoption paperwork, I then went to pick Chelsea up who was at her grandma’s house. She had absolutely no idea that I had just adopted a dog! I got her reaction on video + it is priceless! Check it out here!

Chelsea talked the whole way home about how excited she was + what she wanted to name her. She finally decided on Bailey + was stuck on that. She wouldn’t consider any other name! When we got home, she wanted to be the one to hold her leash + walk her in to surprise Brad. So she did, but once Bailey saw how many people were in the house (Brad, his parents, Cooper + Camille), she didn’t want to go in. So she just crouched down on the stairs + Brad had to come to her + slowly pet her. Poor girl was terrified! Chelsea asked if we could name her Bailey, + Brad said, “Sure.” That night, Bailey hid in our downstairs bathroom + wouldn’t come out. We tried to give her food, water, treats, but she wouldn’t touch any of it.

We have had her for about 3 weeks now, + I wish I could say that she is super comfortable now + really likes us, butttttt that would be a lie! She is doing much better. She is eating + drinking now + will sometimes take treats. She is going to the bathroom outside. She doesn’t jump too bad when you get near her now! She even came up + licked my elbow yesterday, so we are getting somewhere!! Her favorite person, by far, is Camille. We don’t know if it’s just because she’s the littlest, or because she just had babies herself + misses them, but Bailey + Camille are two peas in a pod. It’s the cutest thing.

We really couldn’t have picked a better dog, though. She is so calm + so quiet (unlike everyone else in our household!). We have only heard her bark like two times! Her favorite thing to do is lay down (I feel her on that one!). She finds any comfy spot to get cozy in, whether that’s the corner of my closet, Chelsea’s bed, or a pile of Brad’s clothes on the floor! She is getting more used to us everyday + we are so thankful to have her as a part of our family. We got a good one!
