Looking for Fitness Motivation? HOOP Here it is!

A few months ago I was faced with the brutal, yet honest truth: my parents are in better cardiovascular shape than I am.

They can bike, and jog, and jump and zumba…I can make pizza out of just about anything.

Their weeks are incomplete without numerous trips to the gym…My weeks are incomplete without numerous trips to the CVS candy aisle.

They’re not far from their second thirtieth birthdays…I’m not far from 24.

Needless to say, their fitness habits haven’t rubbed off on me.

It’s not that I don’t want to maintain a healthy life-style, I just have a slight addiction to delicious food and hate the gym more than Obama hates Fox News.

But last night, a miracle occurred.

I worked out. And even more more surprising, I enjoyed it.

So you’re probably wondering, what happened last night that sparked my sudden jump on the fitness band-wagon?

Let me take a step back.

Last week I decided to splurge on the 2-for-1 Hershey Kiss deal at CVS, and ended up buying enough candy to feed an entire neighborhood of trick-or-treaters. Even worse, my brain rationalized that the chocolate was “healthy” because it was dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate.

When the stash was gone 2 days later, I realized that I have a problem. So I did what any tech-crazed millennial would do…I turned to Google for support.

After typing in every variation of “burn calories without going to the gym,” I found an article about hula hooping.

It turns out, this plastic elementary school toy is a magical ingredient in the recipe for a strengthened core and slimmed down middle-section. And that’s not all…30 minutes of hula-hooping is proven to burn 300 calories or more.

Ready for the cherry on top? Beyoncé, the queen of beautiful abs, admitted to using a hula hoop to maintain her drool-worthy physique.

So, despite the painful memories I have from my middle school gym class (of not being able to hula hoop for more than 3 rotations), I decided to give this thing a try.

I went to Toys “R” Us and got myself a hula hoop.

As for what happens next…I’ll risk my embarrassment to show you.

Note: you’ll want the volume turned up for this one.

With the help of some of my favorite 90s music, combined with the determination to keep the hula hoop in the air for more than 5 seconds, I managed to get cardio exercise from the comfort of my own living room.

And if I, the queen of junk food and ultimate anti-gym-er can do it, anyone can.

Now the question is, will I stick with my new-found hobby? Or will this be just a phase?

Happy Hooping!
